Mercedes-Benz will be showing off the all-new 2016 Smart fortwo cabrio in a few weeks at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The biggest change going forward is the canvas soft-top. Known as the “tritop,” the roof can now slide back to two positions forming either a targa-like setup or all the way back, much like the Fiat 500C and the previous-generation Fortwo.

This time around, the roof’s guiding bars can also be removed and stowed inside the tailgate and the roof itself can be controlled from inside a car or remotely. Three canvas colours are available – blue denim, red or black.

As for the rest of the car, expect to see the same changes as we did on the fixed-roof Fortwo. Passion, Prime and Proxy are the three available trim levels. A 71-horsepower 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine is standard, while buyers can opt for a 0.9L turbo-three with 90 horsepower for more kick. Both engines can be hooked up to a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

We’ll bring you more on the Smart Fortwo Cabrio when the Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off Sept. 15.
