According to a new report, the 2016 Toyota Tundra may receive a 5.0-litre turbodiesel V8 engine.

WardsAuto suggests the next-generation Tundra will share a variant of the Cummins diesel engine set to be introduced in the next-generation Nissan Titan, also due out in 2016. The differences between the Titan and the Tundra diesel mills are still unclear, but Nissan says its V8 engine will produce somewhere around 300 horsepower and “more than” 500 lb.-ft. of torque.

Leaked specs last week, hot on the heels of Nissan’s Frontier Diesel Runner, peg the Titan’s diesel V8 at 275 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, but those numbers haven’t been confirmed.

Toyota reportedly worked on an in-house diesel engine, but that project was put on hold in 2008 following the less-than-stellar economic times. The Cummins diesel, according to an unnamed source at Toyota, suggests it would probably be a placeholder while the company goes back to developing its in-house diesel, depending on the success of the Cummins V8.

At the moment, the only half-ton pickup offering a diesel engine is the Ram 1500. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder EcoDiesel mill pumps out 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque while reportedly returning 10.6L/100 km in the city and 7.1 on the highway.
