Ever since the Toyota FT-1 Concept made its debut last month, the buzz has been fixated on the return of the Supra sportscar. While Toyota hasn’t outright come out and said it, there are more than enough hints at the FT-1 hitting production.
Perhaps the clearest indicator yet of Toyota’s intention to return to its sports car roots stems from a new report out of The Motor Report (hat tip to TopSpeed). The report indicates that earlier this month on Feb. 10, Toyota filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark office to register the ‘Supra’ name and logo once more.
At this point, there has been no solid confirmation from Toyota’s end, but these latest developments are certainly promising that the Japanese automaker will finally resurrect its legendary sports car.
As it stands, latest rumours predict the FT-1 hitting production in 2017, taking aim at the likes of the Acura NSX and the Nissan GT-R. If it does, the rear-wheel-drive sports car could be powered by either a high-output turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a V6 mated to a hybrid powertrain, putting out somewhere in the neighbourhood of 400 horsepower.
