“Blood is thick,” says the first line of the song in this fun BMW commercial for its new 2 Series. And I hope BMW never forgets that.
Considering that BMW will displease hardcore BMW fanatics everywhere by introducing front-wheel-drive three-cylinder city cars, the fact that the Bavarian automaker has not forgotten its legendary 2002 gives me hope.
The 2002 changed things when it was unleashed in the 1960s. It was everything a BMW was supposed to be and helped establish the reputation BMW has become so famous for. The reputation that could be put at risk by the automaker’s constant attempts to fill every niche in the market instead of focusing on what it does best: Rear-wheel-drive, naturally aspirated inline six-powered driving beasts. The 2002 was considered BMW’s first “Ultimate Driving Machine” and by comparing it to the new 2 Series, we hope this means the coupe will return to its roots and be the most 2002-like car that BMW offers.
In John LeBlanc’s review of the new 2 Series, he says, “The new 2014 BMW 2 Series is a reminder of where the once cultish sporting brand came from.”
