Chevy Corvair Stinger a ‘poor man’s Porsche’: Jay Leno

Don Yenko doesn’t get as much love as certain other celebrated muscle car designers/racers, but the legendary hot rodder is the “Carroll Shelby of Chevrolets,” which is why the most recent guest on the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Leno’s own 1966 Chevrolet Corvair Yenko Stinger, is so special.

The rare Yenko Corvair Stingers (Leno says there were only about 100 of them) were Yenko’s very first racecars, and they all got their own serial numbers, engine modifications, special body accessories and were painted in white and blue, the traditional American racing colours.

Leno bought the car in a fully restored state, but the man he bought it from, a firefighter named Jeff Guzzetta, said it was a “Flintstones car” with a rusted-out floor that was in need of a lot of work.

Leno’s flat-six powered Corvair Stinger is a genuine one (he is impressed by the huge paper trail attached to the car), a rare beast that has been known for getting knocked off by opportunistic restorers. He calls it a “poor man’s Porsche 911,” and praises the very European-like sports car as one of the top 10 General Motors cars of all time.

Check out the episode below, where Leno calls the Corvair Yenko a particular favourite of his:
