BMW‘s new front-wheel-drive platform architecture, known as the UKL1, will underpin 11 new models across the BMW and Mini nameplates.
According to AutoExpress, the platform will appear starting with eight new Mini models, including the redesigned Clubman, Countryman and Paceman. The redesigned 2015 Cooper and Cooper S are the first Mini models underpinned by the UKL1 platform.
Interestingly enough, AutoExpress reports BMW is planning a replacement for the Mini Coupe and Roadster, expected to do battle with the Mazda Miata. BMW is also working on a larger family hauler and a sedan for the Chinese market.
On the BMW front, a production version of the Concept Active Tourer is in the works, set to debut under the 2 Series nameplate. And here we thought even numbers were reserved for two-door coupes and convertibles, and odd numbers for everything else under the BMW umbrella. The 2 Series Active Tourer will slot below the BMW X1 and compete with the recently announced Audi Q1.
