Here at Driving, we love pitting gas-powered cars against their hybrid or diesel-powered twins. There’s no better way to measure efficiency and performance than a side-by-side drive, which is why this Top Gear test was right up our alley.
In this clip from Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson pits the neon yellow Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric Drive against its AMG gas-powered V8 twin in a drag race.
Clarkson calls the gas-powered Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series a “very serious racing car” and does a pretty hilarious German accent while he’s at it. As much as he praises it, however, he admits the supercar is quite overshadowed by the Electric Drive SLS. Although it can barely be heard while driving, Clarkson is quite astounded (and a bit baffled) by the electric SLS.

Before you go, make sure to read our Tale of Three Jettas, where we do a side-by-side drive of the conventional gas-powered, diesel and hybrid variants of the Volkswagen Jetta to see which one was more fuel efficient and to measure which one would save you the most money. We also did the same thing with a trio of Chevrolet Cruzes and with five (count ‘em, five) variants of the Porsche Cayenne.
