Nissan has officially priced the 2015 Micra subcompact from $9,988, establishing itself as the cheapest new car in Canada.
All Micras will be powered by a 1.6-litre inline four-cylinder engine, rated at 109 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 107 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. The Micra is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic, both of which send power to the front wheels.
Make no mistake, the base Micra S promises the most basic of basic amenities for its $9,988 price tag. Standard features include 15-inch alloy wheels, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD/AUX sound system, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, four-way manually adjustable seats up front, a rear window wiper and a 12-volt power outlet, among others. Step up to the Micra S 4AT and that adds a four-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning and cruise control for $13,298.

The mid-range Micra SV starts at $13,698 equipped with the five-speed manual. Features such as Bluetooth, power windows, heated mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat are standard, while the four-speed automatic is available for an extra $1,000. Furthermore, Nissan is offering the Convenience Package on the SV, adding a 4.3-inch display and a back-up camera for an extra $500.
At the top of the Micra family is the SR trim, offering every feature from the SV equipped with the Convenience Package, plus a handful of cosmetic bits. Front fog lights with chrome trim, unique headlights and tail lights, a rear spoiler, side skirts, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 16-inch wheels are standard on the Micra SR. It starts at $15,748, while the automatic transmission is again available for an additional $1,000.

Although the current Micra has been on sale in 160 countries across the globe since 2010, Nissan has specifically tweaked it for the Canadian market. Enhancements like front and rear sway bars and a tighter turning circle were made to Canadian-spec Micra models. In addition, rear heater ducts are standard — let’s face it, our winters are cold — and the folding rear seat has been redesigned to, in Nissan’s exact words, “ensure hockey sticks can be easily transported to the rink.”
Assembled in Aguascalientes, Mexico, the Nissan Micra will hit Canadian dealers this April.
