Ram to add Pentastar V6 on higher-end 1500 models

Given its popularity, Chrysler will be adding the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine as an option on higher-end Ram 1500 trim levels in the U.S.

Bob Hegbloom, director of Ram trucks, told PickupTrucks.com (hat tip to AutoGuide) that the move is a response to the V6 and eight-speed automatic transmission combination proving popular, to the point where sales have been steadily increasing over the past 14 months. In the U.S., Ram dealers are already offering the option.

The Pentastar V6 engine produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft of torque, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Other Ram powertrain options include a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 good for 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as the range-topping 5.7-litre Hemi V8, rated at 395 horsepower and 407 lb.-ft. of torque.

In Canada, the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 is standard on the higher-end Big Horn and Laramie trim levels, while the 3.0L turbodiesel V6 is optional. There is no word yet on whether the Pentastar V6 will be offered on range-topping Ram models in Canada as well.
