The annual Ventura Nationals Car Show takes place on the last weekend of August at the fairgrounds next to the Pacific Ocean in Ventura, Calif. While we were attending a pre-show cruise night at Bob’s Broiler in Downey, Calif., organizer Holly Gollob invited us to come and join the show with our 1950 Chevrolet, known as ‘Alice’.

See how California’s pioneers and budding artists alike blend radical designs with old-school classic cars

We drove Alice over the mountains to the coast and took part in the Friday night Pre-Nationals Cruise and Art Show in downtown Ventura. Early Saturday morning, participants entered the fairgrounds and we were greeted with hundreds of customs and hot rods from all over the state. Customizers like George Barris and Gary “Chopit” Fioto were there, showing off their automotive creations.

A local car club, The Deadbeats, even awarded Alice a giant trophy as their ‘Pick of the show’. The Show was followed up the next day by a ‘reliability run’ north along the Pacific Coast Highway, through the countryside and ended at Nobel’s Fabrication Shop in Ventura for a BBQ lunch.
