The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Special Service Vehicle (SSV) will be added to the automaker’s line of vehicles adapted for police use.

The 2015 SSV Silverado goes on sale this summer and will offer the same durability and capability as the regular truck but with special features designed for police use such as a different battery and alternator system that allows for lights, radios, computers cameras and other equipment to be operated even while the car is turned off.

The truck will be powered by a standard 5.3L V8 (it can run on E85) and police agencies can choose either two-wheel or all-wheel-drive. A 6-foot-6 pickup box is standard, but police can also opt for a smaller 5-foot-8 box.

“The crew cab offers a vinyl rear seat along with large rear doors for easy entry when transporting passengers,” GM says in a press release (interesting use of the word “passengers”). Another interesting feature is a common key so that a police officer can use one key to operate every Silverado and Tahoe on the fleet.

Chevrolet will also offer ship-through options for sirens and other aftermarket police equipment.
