Rumours have begun swirling once again over the possibility of GM introducing a mid-engined Corvette.
The idea is nothing new — ever since the its indroduction, there has always been talk over the “next” Corvette switching engine layouts. In fact, the Corvette’s creator, Zora Arkus-Duntov campaigned for a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout since the beginning. It never came into fruition, but there have been a handful of mid-engine Corvette concepts over the years.
The latest talk comes from Motor Trend, which suggests the upcoming Corvette ZR1 will have its engine relocated and that layout will be carried over to the upcoming generation. Fueling the rumours is the fact that the automaker filed a trademark for the use of the “Zora” name on automobiles in June, pointing to the possibility that a mid-engined Corvette would pay homage to Arkus-Duntov himself.
Interestingly, the report also suggests GM had been working on a mid-engine design for the current C7 generation pre-bankruptcy, but that project was axed following the bankruptcy, as well as Bob Lutz and Corvette chief engineer Tom Wallace leaving the company.
